Model-based approach for the analysis of 3D Echocardiography strain to improve diagnosis and therapy of heart failure.

Assessment of left ventricular (LV) mechanical dyssynchrony in heart failure patients is typically based on the echocardiographic analysis of differences in timing of myocardial velocity or deformation (strain) of the ventricular walls. The objective of the MAESTRo ANR project is to propose a new model-based approach: 1) for the analysis of 3D echocardiography strain, in order to improve the diagnosis of cardiopathies (including heart failure), 2) to better select patients that may benefit from an implantable device and 3) to assist the clinicians on the best way to configure device-based therapy.

The objective is to propose a global approach that combines computational models, signal processing and machine learning methods, in order to assist the interpretation of cardiac strain signals, observed from 2D or 3D echocardiography. The first period of the project will be dedicated to the definition of an electro-mechanical model of cardiac activity. Methods will be developed to propose patient-specific implementation of the model. Then, algorithms will be developed to analyse morphology of strain signals. Physiological indices, deduced from these methods, will be merged in order to propose an improved interpretation of myocardial strains during pre- and post- operatory phases of the implantation of a stimulation device.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with expertise in signal processing and computational modeling. Programming skills will also be appreciated (e.g., C++, Matlab). Knowledge about physiological systems would be an advantage but is not necessary.
